The Meaning Behind the Concept:
I am so grateful to see that Asian culture has been gaining greater attention around the world. As much as it is great to focus on all the good, I think sometimes we might forget the difficulties that we’ve faced to get to where we are now. I hope, even though we are a few months past AAPI heritage month, that we still continue to learn about the influence that our heritage brings to the world.
The Butterfly Project is a metaphor for change, growth, and hope. All aspects of this photoshoot were purposeful and intentional. Symbolically, green is the color of a caterpillar's cocoon, as well as the color of growth. The piece that Gina wears in these photos is a fully-wrapped ensemble, which was a must for me in representing the cocoon. The change I want to see is more appreciation and awareness of our cultures. The growth I want to see is more allies. Lastly, the hope that I wish to see is in my asian community that our history will not be forgotten.
Thank you Sodo Studio for allowing me to achieve my vision in your beautiful space. Also huge thank you to my dream team on this day for just trusting my vision and for delivering every detail so intently and so perfectly.
